Zeng Fanzhi studied oil painting at the Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, where he was strongly influenced by German Expressionism, which is evident in many of his works. His work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world, and in 2008 his Mask Series 1996 No. 6 became the highest grossing work by a Contemporary Asian artist to that date.
